Sorry this is sort of unrelated to the blog but I wanted to get your thoughts ;) So I am desperately needing/wanting a new hairstyle. My hair is a thick, wavy mess. It's not even a cute wavy, or a wavy that I could make look good. It's dull and bland, and hard to manage because I have so much hair! Every time I go for a cut, the stylist always comments, "wow, your hair is thick!" So I just put it up, pretty much all the time! I would love to just chop it all off and have a cute short hair style.
Can I get your opinion? Any hair stylists out there? If you don't think I'd look good, you can just say it, you won't hurt my feelings ;) 2 of my friends pretty much already told me I wouldn't look good with a pixie cut, they told me I'd look like a boy! lol. So initially I'd love to get a pixie cut like these lovely ladies pictured below.. but I think my head shape is kind of weird so I don't know if I could pull it off.
maybe I could ease into it with a short short hairstyle like this:
I just want to do something completely new & fresh, something I've never done before! You know? I think it'd be really liberating :) What do you think?
ps: if you a short hairstyle, I'd love to see pics!
I too have really thick, wavy hair that's completely unmanageable and I cut the whole lot off, all the way down to a really short 'Hallie Barry' cut. It was a great idea, facial features stand out so much more, jewellery is much more prominent. There is a lot of upkeep with the style though, regular trims are necessary but daily styling is a doddle.
ReplyDeleteI used to have my hair cut like Mandy Moore's super short pixie. Before I snipped it all off, I was sure I would never look good, but let's be honest here--I looked great! ;) I am sure you would also!
ReplyDeleteI totally sympathize. I, too, have a LOT of thick wavy-sometimes-curly-sometimes-flat-often-crazy hair. I usually flat iron it into obedience. Last summer I decided it needed to be chopped off. Per some advice from my stylist, I went with a quite short, stacked bob - longer in the front so I could still pull it off my face/back if I needed/wanted to. It worked with my crazy curly/wavy, and also looked pretty smoothed out. Super easy, totally do-able. I hate when people tell us thick-haired ladies we can't go short.
ReplyDeleteShorter hairstyles (that aren't pixie cuts) are a little trickier to manage with wavy hair. I have this problem myself. It can definitely work, but unless you want to straighten it every day, you have to go with the right cut! Michelle Williams does short/wavy well. Example: http://www.short-hair-style.com/image-files/michelle_williams_short_texture_hair.jpg
ReplyDeleteI love the Kiera Knightly cut! I'm thinking of cutting mine off at the beginning of the next year to have a Year of Adventure and then see how much it grows in a year. I've had really short hair before and what I tend to do is always make sure I have my makeup on with lipstick, and I tend to dress more feminine as well. It will always grow out if you don't like it. :)
ReplyDeleteI think a nice shoulder-length bob with side bangs would work PERFECTLY for you. I was almost contemplating a pixie cut this year but a blog-friend told me she had one and it was a lot more maintenance than you'd think!
ReplyDeleteDo it. I cut my hair into a short! pixie cut about three months ago and I simply adore it. Your face is suddenly on display for everyone to see, there is no hiding behind hair and it's empowering. I will warn you that my whole sense of style has changed since the cut, in a good way. The messier the better and on days when you roll out of bed and walk to Starbucks, you'll still look polished.
ReplyDeleteGo for it darling. xo
how about this...

ReplyDeleteI have thick, wavy hair, and I had my hair cut like Mandy Moore's a few years ago... I LOVED IT, but it was definitely some work. My hair did not lay down all nice and flat - I had to straighten it quite a bit.
ReplyDeleteBut you should definitely go for it - it's so refreshing! On the way home from the stylist, I stuck my head out the window :-)
Danni, so I have the same problem, but nevertheless I take them very long
ReplyDeleteI do not know if I have the courage to cut them short
I brought them short, for many years, even shorter than the ones shown in these photos, but now that I keep them very long I feel much more feminine ....
I'd advise you not to cut too short,
when they are too short you have to go often to the hairdresser to finish the cut, you should take a half measure
You could use the hair straightener, they get really lighter
I think pixie cuts are adorable, but I've heard they require a lot of upkeep/products/etc to keep them looking polished and feminine. Plus with thick, wavy hair it might be a headache to manage. I think a shorter/bob hairstyle would be cute... and just long enough to curl it, straighten it, pin it up, or do whatever you want.
ReplyDeleteThen again, that's all my opinion! You are so adorable and could totally pull of a pixie! Do what your heart tells you!!
I also have very thick hair! I've always kept my hair long until a few years ago when I got really brave and chopped it off WAY short. It was a cute bob and I LOVED it! Currently, I'm growing it back out again (I had the bob for a couple of years and then the shoulder length for a while now I want to go back to the long locks). Whenever I go to my stylist I always have her thin it out a LOT. That definitely helps a LOT. But... it's definitely liberating to go super short! I loved it. I think the Kiera Knightley look is my favorite! I love the long bangs that you could sweep to either side of your face or just let hang messily in front.
ReplyDeleteI say go for it, it will aways grow back. :)

i have LOVEd mandy moore's hair dos over the years... do one of hers!
ReplyDeleteMy hair is very similar to yours, and I've had every haircut known to woman. I think a short cut would look fabulous.
ReplyDeleteBut, beware the bangs. Thick, wavy hair, especially in the summer, makes for some very tough bangs styling.
Perhaps you should start off with a shoulder-length bob, and go shorter later? Ginnifer Goodwin's hairstyles are all cute, but this is one I think would be great for you: http://www.hairfinder.com/celebg/hairstyle-ginnifer-goodwin3.htm
I cut my long hair off three years ago and I have never regretted it for one minute! I have very thick, wavy, brown frizzy hair but now instead of a boring pony tail every day it is short and cute!
ReplyDeleteMy advice would be to ask around and find a hair stylist who will not only be able to give you a new do but also recommend the right products for your hair type. The right products and a good hair stylist make a huge difference! (The couple times I was desperate for a haircut and let someone else do the cutting, I got a supper boy cut)
Also in my opinion once you have shorter hair it becomes more important to accessorize! Big earrings and necklaces and such! But I don't think that would be a problem for you. :)
Good Luck!

Hmm..I don't have short hair, but long. However, I did recently cut my hair at this new salon. I've never been very good at maintenance with my hair, it's always up, half up, or down. Very simple and plain. But, ever since I got this haircut (trim,w layers and side bangs) which was pretty typical i thought, I've never received so many compliments! So, if you want a hair stylist who is amazing, let me know and I can refer you! She's located in Upland, CA. ;)
ReplyDeleteChopping off all my hair was the most freeing thing I've ever done. It seriously feels like liberation on some weird level.
ReplyDeleteYour face will work great with a pixie, I say go for it. I'd warn against half-way, it's harder to keep than long hair. I'd recommend very short in the back & longer in the front, 30 seconds with a hair dryer & you're styled. (I have incredibly thick hair too, so I can vouch for it.)
I've been growing out my pixie & at least once a week I think it's a mistake & consider chopping it all over again.
I have super thin hair too! I've wanted to chop it off for years, but was too afraid! Not to mention my hair stylist was very hesitant. However, I talked her through it and had her give me the Emma Watson. It does require me to do a bit to it (or it sticks up. Hehe), but that just means a super quick hit with the blow dryer and some product. I personally love it!
ReplyDeleteI think something like the Keira Knightley cut would look cute on you.
ReplyDeleteI used to wear my hair very short, I chopped it off myself one boring evening, in front of the bathroom mirror. It's so easy to style and so low maintenance. I let it grow out for my wedding, but am constantly tempted to go back to short.
hey danni! you know i have short hair and i love it! i have the same problem as you, extremely thick hair. mine is also very curly, and hard to manage. If you were thinking of getting something short but still want it to be girly you could try this style: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_llef5gGmZQ1qzml27o1_500.jpg
ReplyDeletei've been trying to grow my bangs out to pull it off, but it's taking forever!
I just chopped all of mine off too. Couldn't be happier about it!! I pulled together this pinterest board of some cut options... I ended up going with the Shannyn Sossamon one. http://re.pn/b/cg9N.
ReplyDeleteI'm going through the same thing right now. I've had this bob for 4+ years now and I want a change. I tried growing it out, but I look silly with long hair. I so wish the pixie cut would look good on my head, but alas, I would look like a boy as well.
ReplyDeleteI think your hair is beautiful right now... but I say go with the chin-length short to start. It would be so cute on you!
I have really short hair, and I absolutely love it! It's all about confidence. People stop me at the mall (I work in retail) all the time to tell me they can't believe how well I pull it off... it's not because it looks better than other haircuts- it's because I LOVE IT, and I try to "own" it! It's so easy, too. I let it dry on the way to work!

I have been dying to cut and color my hair like the image seen in this link:
ReplyDeletehttp://pinterest.com/pin/32065596/
It is perfect for thick and wavy hair. I'd love to see what you decide to do after you cut it.
Don't fear the pixie! I wanted one for years and finally did it. I did have to wear a bit more makeup and wear earrings to feel feminine, but that's fun anyway.
ReplyDeleteI'm sending readers your way!
http://sparklescribbles.blogspot.com
I used to have a pixie cut, and I absolutely LOVED it! There were times when I didn't feel as feminine, but a little extra effort with makeup or jewelry absolutely makes up for that. If you want to do it, I say do it!
ReplyDeleteI have had long hair my whole life but in January I chopped a lot of it off. It reached just to my chin, so no pixie cut but it was still drastic for me. I do not regret doing it, it was an experience I had to have or I would always wonder. But I quickly found it annoying to style. With my long hair I could easily let it air dry and it would look fine, but now I have to straighten my hair to avoid it being horribly weirdly asymmetrically wavy and crimpy. As a result I have decided to grow it back out.
ReplyDeleteBut like I said, I don't regret giving it a try! I think you should go for a short cut, and if after a couple months you're still all about it, maybe try the pixie!
I've been thinking the same thing, and I have really thick long (wavy in the back) hair.
ReplyDeleteI've never had it short in my life though, and I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to do it.
My hair is so thick I actually can't wear it up - as it gives me a headache. I can only pull it back in a very low pony tail to keep it out of my face. thinning helps but within a few weeks it's just as thick as ever.
I wish you luck in your decision! AND I hope you share a picture after you do it!
I don't think a pixie cut would be the best for you but I like the idea of a longer bob with a bit of an a-line but not too much.
ReplyDeletei cut my hair pixie style this past october and haven't looked back! honestly, for me it was and still is one of the top five best decisions of my life. check it out on my blog: http://www.offswitchblog.com/
ReplyDeleteand good luck with your hair! i can't wait to find out what you decide to do! xo.
ahhh my hair sounds much like yours... wavy, thick, hard to manage. i am trying to grow it out but i have been very tempted lately to just chop it like i usually do. i like having a hair style!
ReplyDeletebut you should definitely go for it. i have never gone as short as a pixie cut, but it seems like it would be really cute on you!
Danni, I think you'd look amazing with short hair! In December, I asked Reinna to cut my hair after I had been growing it out for 2 years to donate to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program. Unlike yours, my hair is very thin but I know exactly what you mean when you say that it feels "blah." I couldn't wait to get a new style! I told Reinna she could do whatever she wanted to my hair (including a pixie cut), but she recommended not going too short too fast because it might be shocking, and you can always cut more later. She gave me an adorable bob that could have easily been trimmed to a shorter style. I have decided to grow my hair out for now because I miss wearing my hair in up-dos, but short hair is so refreshing! Here are some pics:
ReplyDeletehttp://oh-thatsnice.blogspot.com/2010/12/goodbye-hair.html
I can't wait to see your new haircut!
Dude. Go for it! Hair always grows back!!
ReplyDeletehahah, i love the comment above! its just what i was thinking, hair grows! i used to have a pretty short little bob and two years later of no cutting i'm down to my elbows! having long hair has been fun to try out fancy updo's with, but i think i'm going back to the bob soon and donating the rest. good luck with whatever you decide!
ReplyDeleteI think you'd look amazing with Mandy Moore's first style. She has thick hair too.
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely go for it. My hair used to be up to my waist. I went for it and it is short now. I received lots of compliments.
ReplyDeleteAnnie (NJ)
I decided to shave my hair past spring...the better thing i could ever do. It is perfect to me. I have big eyes and long eyelashes. My friends and husband are very excited...the perfect hairstyle for my personality!
ReplyDeletei cut my hair into a pixie cut about a year ago and i've loved having it short. it was really fun but sometimes challenging. i had super long hair before and so a couple months before the pixie i cut it to my shoulders to ease into it. i would definitely recommend cutting in stages. you can always cut more but cutting too much is terrible (i did that too). but i think you'd look adorable with a short cut so go for it girl :)
ReplyDeleteHi Danni!
ReplyDeleteI have similar hair- though it's not quite as thick as you make yours out to be. I've always loved the shoulder length look. I think it looks great, but it can still be pulled back on days that you don't have time to fix it. Here are a few that I like:

Good luck!
Hair grows back. Go for it!
ReplyDeleteCheck out Ashley Greene as Alice Cullen in Twilight, her hair is cute and short and flippy...its how my hair is now and I adore it!
ReplyDeleteI have thick hair too and have had VERY short hair which was great but you just have to get it cut ALL THE TIME to maintain the look! go for it though, it will grow back if you don't like it.
ReplyDeleteI too have wavy thick hair and I'm a SLAVE to my blow dryer. If you're willing to spend some time maintaining a shorter hairstyle, I say go for it! Hair grows back anyway :)
ReplyDeleteThis woman seems to have thick, wavy hair, and I *adore* her pixie:
ReplyDeletehttp://vanessajackman.blogspot.com/2011/05/violaine.html
Actually, as mine grows out, I plan to curl the top so it looks like this; I just cropped my own very thick, very straight hair into a dense sassoon-esque pixie and I LOVE it. But I've been a short-hair girl for most of my life.
Cropping my hair totally revitalized my style; I'm having fun dressing again, and playing with different looks. I say, do it!
I used to have long hair and decided to chop it all off and all I have to say is it feels great! Just go for it.
ReplyDeleteI love having short hair, its so much easier to manage. You can see my hairstyle on my blog
http://summerphotoaday.blogspot.com/
Hope that helps.

I cut my hair pixie short three years ago. everyone had always told me it would look horrible, but once it was short most people loved it (and the ones who didn't had more of a problem with me having the guts to actually go for it and cut it all off). I think everyone - every woman - should have short hair at least once in her life. it's a great experience!
ReplyDeleteI think you would look very cute in a pixie cut! I have one too, and there was a lot of people telling me not to cut it because I would look like a boy... But I cut it off myself, and now everyone goes around telling me how cute I am, and my face comes forth much better :) So I say; Do it! It is your hair! It will grow out, the world doesn't end or anything else as stupid if it doesn't come out right :) Just make sure you get the right pixie cut for your face, they are not all the same! :)
ReplyDeleteI had the EXACT same idea a couple of months ago. I was so tired of my scraggly longish hair. I got a longer style bob with layers, something hairdressers said I could never do because I have baby fine hair. I've been loving it! I got so many compliments (and still do). I do have to style it everyday, but I don't mind because it makes me feel so good!
ReplyDeleteHere's a picture
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z0_vevMcxK4/Tg5Eblwgl5I/AAAAAAAAArM/fMA-ppsL0oI/s150/DSC_0257.jpg
Definitely go for it!
Bobs are cute! I have similar hair to yours (thick, coarse, wavy, a pain to deal with) and I just cut mine about chin length and it's great for summer! Dries in an instant and feels a lot healthier :) Also, you can always go shorter, since hair can take a while to grow back so maybe start with a longer cut?
ReplyDeleteI have a super short pixie cut (like the one Emma Watson had- less than 2 inches long) and I LOVE it.
ReplyDeleteHowever- people WILL tell you it is butch. Heck, it kinda is. My mom HATES me hair short and makes a point of telling me every time she sees me. I love my hair short though- so easy to deal with in the morning. Hair + makeup takes less than 5 minutes.
If I really had guts (and *ahem* could stand my family telling me even more how much they disliked my hair) I would get a bizz cut.
Doooo it!! I have a pixie cut and I absolutely love it. It is so easy and so sassy with zero fuss. The only thing is that I have to get haircuts more often than I would if my hair were longer. Other than that, it's my favorite style, evah. There are some pics on my blog! Can't wait to see what you do! :) ps awesome gallery - I always love to see how other ladies sport their 'dos.
ReplyDeleteDo it!
ReplyDeleteI cut all mine of last year (14 inches or so) and I am so happy I did. I can't wait for it to grow back, but the in between is fun too.
If you have wavy hair, girl, you can do ANYTHING with it. I've been cutting my own hair (minus a couple years when my stylist friend took my scissors from me when I was trying to grow my hair out) for some time now and people always think it was done professionally. If you have waves, it doesn't matter how you cut it. Just lop it all off!
ReplyDeleteI am all for cutting the hair off! I have wavy Asian hair, and recently just lopped 8 inches off into a graduated bob (back shorter than the sides like this-
ReplyDeletehttp://www.google.com.sg/imgres?imgurl=http://www.studiodnasalon.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/graduated-bob1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.studiodnasalon.com/04/28/2010/easy-hairstyles-for-girls-on-the-go-the-short-hair-edition/graduated-bob-2&usg=__7qREAlsERrL1PfPhJwXx04P8so0=&h=348&w=500&sz=43&hl=en&start=0&sig2=iIxDGeI1i1Om2DddKNxpmA&zoom=1&tbnid=qJSwWbJrZF7P-M:&tbnh=147&tbnw=208&ei=TWoRToKWIYrlrAf-tPCHBA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dgraduated%2Bbob%2Bhairstyles%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D614%26tbm%3Disch%26prmd%3Divns&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=580&vpy=90&dur=1049&hovh=187&hovw=269&tx=167&ty=145&page=1&ndsp=16&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0
New season in life, out with the old. :)
I didn't think it'd look good on me but EVERYONE loves it (to be honest, so do I except having to blow the sides straight when I go out).
The thing with pixie cuts and wavy hair is that it may stick out and require a lot of hair product to keep it down which isn't so good for the scalp and hair. (I did that about 12 years ago) so I'd say go with the shorter bobs but keep some length at the sides to frame your face so it's a bit more flattering. (don't kill me here! my face is a bit more square too)
Show us your new haircut when u do it! :)
Well, I have the opposite problem you have. My hair is very fine, but heavy so it always lays flat if i have it long. I have short hair and LOVE it to death. It so easy to change up the style everyday and then when you go in for a trim you can totally get a different style every time! So versatile! It is empowering and you have a lovely face and can so picture you working short hair!
ReplyDeleteBesides, hair grows back:) I say GO FOR IT! You will love it!
Do it! I think it will look great. :) Can't wait to see. my faves: bottom left for short / upper right for long. two things when getting short hair envy - it can look different with different hair lengths and different hair textures.
ReplyDeleteI have thin, wavy hair. It was so hard to keep looking nice, so I just cut it all off last year, and have not regret it. I keep going shorter and shorter, daring myself to an almost-pixie style. :)
ReplyDeletehttp://kirstinrosephoto.blogspot.com/2011/07/shorter-and-shorter-personal.html
the "short short hairstyle" is hard to make look good with really thick hair. i cut hair and also have VERY thick hair...i hacked off my long hair for a pixie (and disregarded the 'you will look like a boy' comments) and absolutely LOVED it. all the naysayers loved it too.
ReplyDeletei say go for the pixie. it's just hair, it will grow back. and if you really feel like a boy, put a flower or oversized bow in your hair :)
happy chopping :)
I have really thick curly hair too, and HATED it when it was long. I wore it up in a bun or braided all through high school. But I finally decided that I needed something easier when I went away to college and cut it to about shoulder length. I loved that, it was so much easier to manage, but it was still thick and heavy, so about a year ago I cut it even shorter.
ReplyDeleteI used Norah Jones' hair style in her 'Chasing Pirates' music video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTxythHY09k) for inspiration, and I LOVE it. I still have fun curls, but my hair stays off my neck, which is ideal for working outside in the summer.
My hairdresser started selling Shielo's Antioxidant Leave in Protectant spray a year ago and i decided to try it, though i was hesitant. I couldnt imagine that 1 product would actually do all that this one claimed to. I tried it for a week with no other styling products, and since that week i have been a believer! This product is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI have SUPER THICK curly hair that i blow dry straight and flat iron. The Shielo Antioxidant Spray leaves it feeling amazing. My hair is shiny, silky, soft and not damaged at all. I will not ever stop using this product. I have tried various styling products for years and have never had such amazing results. It really does do everything it claims. It's also nice to only have to use 1 styling product as opposed to the 2,3, and sometimes even 4 that i was previously using.
I have thick hair which is straight on top but curly/wavy underneath. It never looked good down so I cut my hair short a couple of months ago. It is a lot of effort and can never be left to dry naturally which has made me late a lot. In my opinion if you have thick hair you should cut it really short so the hair doesn't flick out and curl,I have found it is easier the shorter it is.
ReplyDelete
