Nick and I are headed to London in just a few short days! We're off to Chicago for Renegade Craft fair this weekend and then heading straight to London once the show is over. Can't wait. I really love London! I have been but it was quite a few years ago. I am excited to travel with Nick. Do you guys have any suggestions or recommendations? We are definitely planning on the Harry Potter WB Studio Tour and hoping to make a drive out to Highclere Castle to see where Downton Abbey is filmed! Other than that, we'll hit up some museums and markets. But I would love to hear your suggestions if you're a local or have traveled to London before :)
Ah I'm so jealous! I absolutely LOVE and ADORE London! I can't wait to go back again one day! Def check out Portabello Road and Hyde Park! Those are two of my favorite placces! Hope y'all have a blast! :)
I’d definitely recommend you to visit the East End. On Sundays it’s the best with Columbia Rd’s flower market. I also love to pay a visit to Brick Lane market. There you can have an unforgettable bagel and enjoy the vintage vibe. Both of them also offer plenty of independent lovely shops and because you’ll be just 5 mins away, I’d suggest you to visit Spitalfields Old market too.
Oh! And don’t miss the parks. If it’s sunny they’re just lovely. My favorite one is maybe Greenwich Park where you can enjoy breathtaking views over the Thames and the City. September it’s such a beautiful month here in London! Hope you’ll enjoy every single moment. :)
Oh!!! Hav fun....you have to visit: Cambridge for some good buys, visit Topshop- one of my favorite stores, eat at Pizza Express, and you definitely have to enjoy some Sunday Roast! Enjoy!
Oh! I love London and can't wait to go back! My friend took me to Gordon's Wine Bar near the Embankment tube stop. Such a cool place! Great atmosphere and the wine and cheese were to die for!
visit borough market; the southbank; columbia rd flower market on sunday; and portobello road on saturday. also visit liberty on regent street and the parks are amazing if the weather is nice.
my top tip is just do lots of walking, most of the tube stops in zone one are actually quite close together, close enough to walk and then you get to take in the amazing architecture :)
How exciting! I miss living in London so much! I have to agree with the other posts... Gordon's wine bar is in an old WW2 bunker, def go for an afternoon drink or two. Try and beat the after work crown because it gets packed and you can imagine how small it actually is. If you're there on a Sunday go to Spitalfields market near Liverpool Street Station and Brick Road and just wander there all afternoon! It's fabulous! The Victoria and Albert Museum is amazing if you love museums. If you are in Notting Hill go to the Churchill Arms Pub for a thai meal. Trust me, this pub is so beautiful on the outside and the interior doesn't disappoint either! If you have spare time have a look at London Walks, they're a walking tour company and they have different waking tours everyday all over London with various themes. The best walking tours I've ever done, try the Kensington one or The Blitz tour. Also Jack the Ripper walking tour is supposed to be awesome! Have fun!!
I would definitly agree with the other posts, Brick Lane market is really cool and that area in general has lots to look at. Its good on a saturday because its really alive but i have heard spitalfields isnt always open then. The jack the ripper walking tour is really good, it goes from tiwer hill tube stop and is really fun to be on, not just because the tour guide is good but you also get to see lots of interesting parts of london you might otherwise not think to look at. Hope you have an amazing time here!
London is fab! Museum-wise, I recommend the Victoria & Albert museum--it's really easily accessible by the tube, has the best food ever, and is an incredible museum filled with amazing exhibits. It's worth heading to Covent Garden too, but wandering around back streets in the area instead of going straight to the relatively uninteresting chain stores. I recommend Art Box and Orla Kiely in that area. And like someone said a few comments above--try Cambridge! I live here so I might be biased, but it's only a short train ride from London, has some sweet shops and cafes and galleries, and if the weather is good you can go punting! If you've got a spare day, try Norwich too--also just a train ride away and filled with some of *the* best vintage shops and some gorgeous cafes.
We loved London. For food, get hot chocolate at Cafe Rouge, and Yo Sushi is a lot of fun because the sushi goes by on conveyor belts. It's just a good time. We loved the Natural History Museum and the original manuscripts at the British Library. Hampton Court Palace was easy to get to (I think on the train) and it's set up in a really cool way with interpreters and an audio tour. It's also right next to a cute little town. Have fun!
Hello! I used to live there and would loooove to move back! If you like chicken, I'd recommend the restaurant chain called Nando's. They're all over the place. I'd also recommend Muffinski, the delicious muffin shop in Covent Garden. Have a good trip!
I would definitely check the hours of everything, especially the markets! You probably won't be able to visit all of them in one weekend, but weekends are the peak times to go, and some are closed on other days. There are also summer hours for things like changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. And check out Neal's Yard in Covent Gardens! As mentioned above, Portabello Road is amazing - the Portabello Antiques market would be right up your alley with your appreciation of antiques, I think! But most important, google the websites of the markets to find out which are open on which days!
You HAVE to nip by Stoke Newington and eat at Legumes. The area itself has a posh hippie vibe, and there's a stunning cemetery to get lost in (really, it's prettier than it is creepy ;)). All the best with Renegade London!!
if you're in london on a saturday then definitely visit broadway market and have a look at columbia road. absolutely amazing food and street performers and everything. i think you'd really like it. there's some really good vintage stores and artwords bookshop on columbia road which are 100% worth popping in to. let me know if you go :) x
So many great tips already, I'm not sure you need anymore.
If I could tell anyone what to do in London it would be to make sure you have a 'proper' tea at some point ('proper' equals cakes and sandwiches - excellent). For fancy try Claridges; an edgy/urban vibe try around Shoreditch in East London; for some place a bit more arty try the V&A museum. Oh. Museums are free and there's a ball gown exhibition on at the V&A.
Definitely on't forget to pack sweaters and an umbrella :)
London is great, but Yorkshire has my heart! I lived there for a short while, and being from the Midwest, it felt like home (though much damper! lol). I always recommend a visit north if you have the time. The train from London to Leeds and then on to York is the way to go. Sigh, I wish I could pack myself in your suitcase! Have fun!
Oh goody! London is MY city. I love it with all my heart... maybe that's why I lived there and am going back... it's so perfect.
I've seen some people suggest the B. market, which is a must. But the real must is a certain grilled cheese shop there. I think I can honestly say it's the best sandwich I've ever had. Do try it if you can!
Some say that London is overrated, but I strongly disagree. It's the most brilliant place on earth. Too much London, so little time! I know that even though you've been before, you'll just love it!
Hi Danni! Do definitely check out 221B Baker Street and the British Museum. You won't be disappointed. If you have time, visit Brighton (1 hr of train ride away from London) and its Pavilion. Also, here is a guide of a London local (whose blog I follow): http://thisisnaive.com/?page_id=104 (London) and http://thisisnaive.com/?page_id=802 (other places). Bring an umbrella and have oh so much fun!!!
The most obvious destination: Liberty of London. Best fabrics in the world. Boundary St and Redchurch St in Shoreditch has amazing shops. Cant wait to get back there!
Oh man, I'm so jealous! Greg and I have been itching to go abroad since 2008... You guys are going to have a great time :) Can't wait to see your photos!
I'm super jealous too, I spent a summer there finishing up my college credits after walking at graduation. Amazing doesn't begin to describe it. You can see a lot of the best spots pretty much in one day, they're all so close to each other. Start at Parliament/Big Ben and Westminster Abbey, walk down the Embankment (along the Thames) from there and you can see the Eye, the bridge, etc. Then head over to St James Park (my fave park in the city, besides Hampstead Heath) and after that make sure you go to Trafalgar Square! :)
Oh, Danni that is so awesome! You must be so incredibly excited! I studied there in college (i seem to remember you did also) so it holds a very special place in my heart. I have recurring dreams about going back. Have an amazing trip!!
There's a pub called the Lamb and Flag, in Covent Garden. It's so tiny most of the time you have to stand outside. It's a watering hole that was used by Charles Dickens. I just love it's history. Also I would recommend St James Park, it offers great vantage points for photos of Bicks Palace. If you are in London a while and have time to go to Windsor Castle. It's lovely. It has a dolls house that is a replica of one of the palaces. It's just TOO sweet. Don't foget to try some PIMMS I hope the weather warms for you. Have a glorious time
Friends, Thank you so much for reading + supporting my blog, and for taking the time to leave me a comment. Your comment support truly means so much to me. Have a lovely day! xo, danni

ReplyDeleteAre you in London yet? If not, my blog has lots of stuff on it that's off the tourist trail :)
ReplyDeleteDo you have tickets to Highclere or do you just want to see it because I know tickets to tour it are no longer available. Cheers!
