If you haven't seen Downton Abbey season 3 and/or are planning on watching it in the near future, STOP READING b/c there are spoilers ahead.
Can we just talk about Season 3 of Downton Abbey for a second? What is the deal?! I'm not sure how i feel about how it all went down this season. I mean, I guess it opens up a whole new story line for the next season so that could be cool. What did you guys think of Season 3? I was pretty bummed about the 2 actors that decided to leave the show. I read Dan Stevens wanted to pursue other opportunities. While I can understand that, I somewhat can't help but feel it's kind of lousy! Come on. Downton made your career, you could give your fans a couple more years!....? Anyone else with me on this? Anyone glad Matthew & Cybil are gone? Well, I hope they bring in a new guy for Mary or something. Any predictions for Season 4? Here are some photos I've found around the www of Mary & Matthew :)

I am upset over Matthew leaving and have a feeling Mary will turn into an angry old maid....at least for a season. Remember how Matthew kept saying "I am the only one who sees the nice Mary?"
ReplyDeleteMatthew was a shock but Sybil's death was so tragic. I cried way too much over that!
Yeah, I hated Julian Fellowes when Matthew's character was killed in Season 3. But then I read that it was Dan Stevens that wanted to leave Downton :( I hope they find a good man for Mary in Season 4. I cannot wait!
ReplyDeleteAh! I couldn't believe it when Matthew died...I was in complete shock. It also reminded me a little of how that movie City of Angels ended. I was completely devastated about Sybil's death but I sort of felt angry over Matthew. I love Mary and even though she comes off as a bit of a brat sometimes...especially to Edith, I think she's great. I feel so bad for her now. I just feel like she thought she was going to have a hard time to begin with just because of the ordeal with the Turkish man but then she and Matthew finally got together. Now she may end up being even more bitter because she has a baby and what are the chances of her meeting someone new? I just hope they don't make her feel like she doesn't want to be around the baby.... ugh and they went through so much just to be able to have a baby!!!! I wish the season didn't feel like it was so short. When does season 4 start?
ReplyDeleteI'm still upset over this and it's been over a week since I watched the episode. When Sybil died I was shaken, but I felt it was cruel to kill off Mathew. I understand when someone wants to pursue more work opportunities, but I wish they could have found a different way or at least a different time. It would have been nice to have just a bit of pure happiness before we lost Mathew.
ReplyDeletei haven't seen it but i hear soo many amazing things about it!!

first of all....THANK YOU for the spoiler alert, danni!!! i knew months ago what was going to happen in this last episode thanks to a very careless blog headline. it was a terrible thing to wait for. second. i think i'm actually more upset about sybil than matthew (also found out about that one ahead of time thanks to another spoiler). she'd had so much to struggle for, it would have been nice to see her enjoy it!
ReplyDeletewhile it's beyond sad and i will miss Matthew as the only character who could talk sense into everyone else, i kinda agree with this article:

Real life is hard enough without adding insult to injury by watching dramatic drivel like this. The writers have way too much power over viewers' emotions and they're using it recklessly. Why anyone would willingly subject themselves to emotional stress over fictitious characters is beyond me. I'm getting off this roller coaster - no more Downton Abbey for me, I'll stick with comedic sitcoms that make life more enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm disappointed in the comments that suggest the only way Mary can be happy is if another man is brought into the picture for her - looks like you've also adopted early 20th century values for women, as well. I hope for the young women of today, Mary sets an example more like Sybil and comes into her own with strength and independence after her time of grief. I don't mind if she finds a man, but it shouldn't be an "answer" to her loss.
I was devastated by Matthew's death. I so loved that character!! I can't fully understand why Dan Stevens wanted to leave... And I hate how long we have to wait for the 4th season... Eh! Oh well, I guess I will just have to watch him in the BBC version of Sense & Sensibility; it's a good one!! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, that GIF of Matthew fading while walking with Mary is so depressing! I was so sad when Sybil died and then just got mad when they killed Matthew off in the last two seconds of the finale. What the heck! I'm definitely annoyed with the actor for jumping ship like that. I was such a fan of the show but I won't be able to watch it next season. Too emotionally frustrating!
ReplyDeleteGreat list of other period shows, though! I'm so excited for the next season of Sherlock!
I am still in shock about Matthew. I had heard he was leaving the show, but while watching the episode I completely forgot and was blindsided by it. He was the level-headed and rational one, but more than that, he added so much heart to the show.
ReplyDeleteSo this is your first post on Downton that I've actually been able to read as I've always been behind! But I caught up in time to watch the Christmas Special...and then they kill Matthew? It's actually turned me off watching the next series as the storylines are just getting ridiculous! One family tragedy (although Sybil was a favourite of mine) I can understand but people tune into Downton for some uplifting drama!!
ReplyDeleteyeha what the what! I loved Sybil, so I was pretty bummed about her character. I agree, Dan could've sacrificed his next year at least for the good of the art, but who know could make the show more interesting. I also felt they sped things up too much in this season. It felt like the cliff notes for a show.
ReplyDeleteWow your post is totally beautiful and I was just talking about it this week. How can it be? I mean, I understand that he has to leave but still, how they gonna manage to make this show evolve right, I dont know? Of course I totally want Matthew back, like Right Now... But I am still curious of how it is going to be... But for now, I just feel like re-watching the whole serie so that I can cry with all the Mary and Matthew moments!
ReplyDeleteNice post,
Olive xox
I really hope that they do not bring in another love interest for Mary. I think it would be great to see her focus raising her son and taking on more responsibilities around the town and their home. And yes, I am not altogether over Matthew's death.
ReplyDeletedanni! we were SO sad season 3 ended the way it did, and i nearly cried! i kept hoping matthew was just in a coma and would resurface in season 4, until we read all the news about dan stevens :( alex thinks the show won't be as good anymore, but we still can't wait for season 4! i was thinking of you and how ridiculous the ending is! :(
ReplyDeletep.s. MISS YOU!
I agree completely! So sad Dan left, he could have stayed a few more seasons! At the same time, I guess it'll make the show a bit fresh again, with possible suitors for Lady Mary. xo
ReplyDeleteI've heard of "Lark Rise to Candleford," but never watched, so glad to hear it's worth a viewing! I've gotten hooked on the "Marple" and "Poirot" series lately on Netflix (fabulous 1920's - 1950's fashions and British sleuths). And "Monarch of the Glen," while a modern series, has a character played by Julian Fellowes -- he's actually really great as an actor.
ReplyDeleteHi Danni
ReplyDeleteIn Australia we are seeing a series called "The Paradise". British period drama series about the first department store in Britain - the main character is a young girl who is very ambitious and I predict we will see her take over the running of the store, but that's probably a long way off yet. :)

Matthew and Sybil were my two favourite characters! I don't even know if I want to watch the next season anymore :(
ReplyDeleteI love period pieces also. I love the new Upstairs Downstairs but sadly they are not going to make a third season. South Riding was also a good mini series to watch.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see what they come up with for the next season of Downton Abbey. I'm almost more interested to see what happens with the staff although the whole show wouldn't be worth watching without Granny.
I'm not happy either! It was just annoying that they both died around childbirth. If they both had to go, I would have liked for them have at least made a better story. Her death was so obvious that it was going to happen. His wasn't, but still. The same story twice? Nothappy with the writing!
ReplyDeleteI'm only at season 1. When I read your post in my email, the first picture showed right under your spoiler alert, so I couldn't avoid seeing the picture. Now I don't have to wonder if they're going to get married... :P
ReplyDeleteI'm still bumped out over Cybil and Matthew, I cried when Cybil passed and got mad when Matthew died, certainly not the way I thought things would end up.
ReplyDeleteI was a bit disappointed with how they approached Season 3, having fallen in love with the two seasons past. Sybil was my favorite character out of them all and her dying was a bit of a shock to the whole household. :P I sadly haven't really thought of Downton Abbey the same after this most recent season. Perhaps, that's because I'm so enthralled with Sherlock {which by the way I was squealing when you mentioned it :D}. We'll see if they can redeem themselves in season 4.
ReplyDeletei am with you!! i am rather annoyed at Dan Stevens for leaving so early. it's hard to imagine the show without him. i didn't realize the actress that played Sybil wanted to leave also, how lame :( it's hard to imagine liking it as much with the two of them gone.
ReplyDeleteIm still just sick over Matthew, I can't hardly stand it! I wish he would have stayed. I read several articles about him leaving, and he has been really down to earth about everything and knows that . BUT still I'm with you, at least give us another year! :(
ReplyDeleteWell, Downton is at its foundation a soap. It's Downton, so if you're happy you're going to suffer for it. And that last episode was tying too many Matthew story lines up far too neatly for anything but killing him off.
ReplyDeleteSybil's death was actually the better one plot and story-wise. SO many women died in childbirth, no matter their station.
I was shocked that Mathew died. That just, wow!!! And as for Sybil I was really sad, because although it is a true representation of the time (I mean death by childbirth was so common) I was sad because Sybil was my favourite! She was just so rebellious!
ReplyDeleteI guess Tom Branson's becoming one of the main characters once and for all. He become a co-owner of Downton, and now only him and Lord Grantham left. That's quite a promotion for a chauffeur! I think, next season will be about Mary surviving in her grief and Tom and Lord Grantham cooperating better and managing Downton.
ReplyDeleteSO BUMMED ABOUT DAN STEVENS. Ugh...
ReplyDeleteHere's a link to Lady Mary's supposed new love interest....

May I recommend The Forsyte Saga. Just finished it and it was pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI also recommend The Paradise (BBC series). There's only one season thus far, but it's really, really good. It used to be on YouTube, not sure where one can view it now, but if you can find it, definitely give it a try! Unfortunately, it's unlikely to be on PBS because its competition is Mr. Selfridge's, which has already been contracted out with PBS. :(
ReplyDeleteHere's the trailer:

I agree whole heartidly witht his post! I also think we just got mary and mathew together can't we enjoy that for a bit longer? goodness.

The Joyful Thrifter
not to be dramatic or anything but ... this blog post makes my heart hurt! oh matthew and mary. WHY must you be split up again?! the universe (of downton) was just making sense! such is life i guess. sigh.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post!! It's kind of a serious matter for Downton Abbey's fans but here in France the show is not well known, so nobody speaks about it.
ReplyDeleteI was not that surprised about Sybil; I don't know why but she always seemed to me like a less important role. However, I was completely shocked about Mathew!!
After a few minutes of serious thinking, I guessed that the show just wanted to keep a main love-tension story there, which could be Mary and Branson. I'm quite sure that we're going to see a new long difficult seduction story going on for several seasons...
