Thought I'd start sharing some fun local places as we explore our city and surrounding cities. I came across Daiso from Yelp and was so excited to visit, how did I not know about this place sooner?? ;) Anyway, I am sure many of you already know about this shop but in case you don't, it's a Japanese dollar store. Everything is $1.50.

I totally loved this store when I was in Tokyo. I got so much cool and cute stuff there for so little money. In Japan Daiso is even cheaper, everything is 100 yen (= 1 dollar)

Making Life's Lemons
I've been there! I was so excited when I walked in, I wanted to buy everything. So bright and fun in there.
ReplyDeleteDaiso is so fun! I went to one when I was in Taipei. I'm guessing they only have locations in California.
ReplyDeleteI love Daiso! So many cheap finds. I especially love picking up their origami paper for crafts. I'm not sure if you have a Ichibankan in your area, but it's a smaller version of Daiso.

ReplyDeleteThey had Daiso in Vancouver. I loved shopping there and purchased quite a few items.
ReplyDeleteI miss when the Daiso here was also $2 or less... but each time I go back, I see products on sale for $5 and even $10. I truly miss when Daiso first opened here and for the first couple years, their products were $2 or less. Nevertheless, Daiso is a great place to be! There are so many unique things and they can make anything and everything look cute!

ReplyDeleteI'm curious as to whether everything in the Daiso Japan store is actually made in Japan or is it made in China because everything is so cheap. Can you check your goodies and let us know? When I was in Japan previously in Ito-Ya, one of the largest stationery stores there, a store employee was taking a businessman around and as I was eavesdropping on their conversation, I was disappointed to learn that about 75% of Japanese stationery actually is made in China.

Oh I'm so glad you shared! I never knew nor would I have really even thought to look. I need to explore and venture out a little more. I spent a lot of time in Japan in my last job - a lot. This is what's usually called ¥100 store and they are abundantly available in Japanese cities. Oh sweet love. I can't tell you how many cool, neat things I bought and still treasure. And the items were not just junky things like most of our dollar stores. My favourite was always the stationery section where it was packed with all sorts of paper love and mechanical pencils galore. I'm going to take my mum. Thanks so much for sharing this. x

ReplyDeleteHi, thought i'd post an update to my own question above. I finally had the chance to visit a Daiso! It was as great as everyone says. Some of the products of the one I visited (in San Francisco) are made in Japan, but plenty were also made in China, and a few in Korea and Thailand as well. You just have to read the labels carefully to know where your products are coming from (if you care).
